jillgg’s good life (for less)

Today’s post is going to be all about how I dealt with my sons teenage acne. I wanted to avoid Accutane and harsh chemicals and was ready to think WAY outside the box in order to do so. Keep in mind, I am NOT a doctor or a medical professional. You should ask a professional before starting any of these treatment options if you don’t feel comfortable with them or have questions. I also think there are a few steps here and there you could skip if you don’t feel comfortable with them and get good results. I think the following steps will get you the BEST results, but you and your teen have to choose what you feel most comfortable with. My son had whiteheads, black heads, active pimples and cystic pimples when we first stared this plan. Really, it was a bit of everything. We tried LOTS of things, but in the end, this is the cheatsheet of what really worked for us. There are tons of variables and every teen will have a different diet, different type of skin and different ability to stick to a routine when it comes to managing teen acne. This is what worked for us. It took quite a while to get it figured out but once we did it was like a lightbulb! Also note that we started this plan last winter (January 2021) and since then my son has fallen off the wagon a bit with the routine and really with teens it’s always good to remember progress over perfection. For the month of August, we are going back to being super diligent again to get back on track for back to school… so it’s a constant work in progress.

Here is the step by step we used and why/how…

Teen acne is so tough since their diets (junk food 24/7!) and their lifestyle (sweaty sports, and not always great with keeping a routine) can really make all the raging hormones even worse.  This is what worked for us…

Step 1: Try to eliminate acne causing foods. For us it was SUGAR & DAIRY.

This is probably the most difficult step. Our teen is driving, buying food with friends, eating at friends houses, etc. But for our situation sugar and dairy were two HUGE triggers for acne. A big huge glass of milk and a box of Mike & Ike’s is a healthy snack, right!?!? Haha. This will likely be the most difficult to control, so we had an honest conversation about it with our son and just reminded him that to help the acne clear up it was important to keep sugar and dairy IN MIND at least. Try, try, try to limit it. There are some health professionals that will swear that diet doesn’t matter. That was NOT our experience (or even my own personal experience – dairy ALWAYS makes me break out). Be ready to think outside the box and be ready to try less conventional ways to fight acne.

Step 2: Bring in the professionals, at least once.

After wearing masks for school, sports and work last fall and just the regular teen hormones, my sons face was really struggling come winter. I took him for an extraction facial just to get the bulk of the black heads and whiteheads removed safely. It can be painful, but it heals so quickly. Make sure you ask when scheduling an appt if your skin spa works with teens regularly. I’ve found that some spas do and some don’t. If you are local, we went to Skin Renewal Center and they were great and work with teens a lot. They also wanted to sell us a $1000 teen skincare package. Wow… my plan here won’t cost near that, but the facial was amazing to get a head start on eliminating the acne.

Step 3: Start DIM supplements.

Again, I am NOT a doctor. Talk to a health professional about this step if you don’t feel comfortable – or there are LOTS of great articles if you google it. A woman giving me a facial told me about it when I was asking for tips about teen acne and this arguably was the MOST pivotal step for my son. DIM supplements can usually be found in the women’s health section of a health food store. We bought ours directly from Grand Pearl Spa locally where they recommended it to me initially. We did TWO DIM capsules a day for the first bottle and saw improvements almost right away. It was crazy. Then I bought a second bottle and did one capsule a day for him for about 2 more weeks. My understanding is that this supplement is for short term use. It helps get over the hump of the worst of the acne. Total he took DIM for less than 6 weeks.

Step 4: Get on a skincare routine and stick with it.

This is tough for many teens (mine included) so there was lots of parental involvement in this one. Basically me chasing my son around with skincare every night or constantly reminding him. But it was worth it. I will lay out my favorites and you can decide what works best for you, but I will say that high quality products make a huge difference here. I go for safe ingredients and don’t mind spending a little extra than drug-store prices because I believe it truly makes a difference AND because it’s worth the investment. Accutane is super expensive and potentially dangerous and treating acne scars as an adult is also super expensive. This is an investment that’s worth it.

– Wash with cleanser with salicylic acid which is for preventing/treating acne. We like this one.

– Moisturize with a high quality moisturizer that doesn’t have fragrances or ingredients that could possibly contain hormone disrupters. Dryness can increase the number and severity of breakouts since dry skin can become cracked and let in more bacteria. Teens often think DRY skin equals clear skin, but it’s just not true. Healthy skin equals clear skin. We like this one.

– Wash with cleanser with salicylic acid again.

Alternating nights: Treat with a BHA/AHA serum. This helps exfoliate the skin while you sleep and clears up existing breakouts while working to combat new breakouts. We like this one, this one is similar too.

– Moisturize!

Step 5: Incorporate microneedling into your skincare routine.

At home microneedling can be super affordable and effective with both clearing up acne, working to heal existing acne and over the long term minimizing hyperpigmentation from acne scars. It’s something I’ve used myself on acne and my son has seen tremendous improvement from doing it regularly as well. Microneedling is simply spurring on the healing process of the skin by making minuscule holes in the skin which prompt the skin to “repair.” I personally use it every time I feel a breakout coming on to avoid the pimple all together and then after any breakouts to heal quicker. I use a GloPro, but my son has used this cheaper option from Amazon that works great too. I replace my GloPro head once a year, for the Amazon option, I would replace it every 6 months, especially with regular use. ALWAYS disinfect the micro needler after use, the GloPro comes with a small bottle you will with alcohol to spray it down. Otherwise buy a small spray bottle and fill it with alcohol.  Sanitary use of the microneedler is key!

Step 6: Incorporate a quality and powerful mask once a week.

Masks can be super effective at clearing out tough acne, keeping it away and helping to heal the skin over the long term. There are 3 that my son has used and that I highly recommend. I will list them in ascending order to how strong they are. Some of these might be too strong at first if there is a lot of active acne but as the acne clears up these are great for continuing to keep the acne away and clearing up any lingering acne. This charcoal mask is great for the whole face, or just spot treating trouble areas or breakouts. I regularly use it on the areas where I break out most (chin and lower cheeks, for me and the t-zone for my son). These peel pads are super easy for teens to use and quite strong. I love that they are so conveniently packaged. This mask is super strong and both my son and I use it to treat the whole face, it stings at first but goes away and may cause redness the first few times you use it. Start with 7-10 minutes if you or your teen is sensitive to it and work up to 20 minutes or so.

what to pack: weekend at the lake!

Summer in Michigan means always seeking out the water on the weekends! If you are headed out for a little summer weekend at the lake like our family did last weekend I pulled together the dream packing list. Shorts, tees, tanks, sweatshirts, slides and sneakers make for an effortless weekend packing list for boating, heading to the beach, enjoy brunch and evening campfires.

jillgg’s good life (for less)

It’s crazy how fast this summer has gone. It’s nuts to think we are already staring down fall sports and back to school. Summer is so tiring as a mom – haha – but I’m desperately trying to just embrace the chaos and the lack of any type of schedule or routine. I know once fall hits, I’ll be craving these crazy days again. Usually late summer is a total dead spot for fashion with retailers focusing solely on fall clothes in the middle of 80 degree days. This year it seems like there is a huge influx of late summer new arrivals. Pieces that *hint* at fall without being specifically geared towards cold weather wear. Moody rusts and browns, dusty pinks and creamy whites all work great for NOW but also hint at the golden hour of summer that is upon us.

There are so many good finds here… they all went straight on my own wishlist. I hope you find inspiration here for your own closet too as we head into fall.

recent Amazon finds!

Today I’m rounding up some recent Amazon finds I am loving. From a new favorite sun hat to a great organizing product to outdoor items… it’s all here. Not pictured is this new expanding garden hose which is great for small spaces. We have quite a small outdoor living area and we had a HUGE hose out there taking up a ton of space. This one is nice and compact but expands when in use. I also bought this outdoor firewood rack since our wood for the solo stove was getting messy. This way it’s not sitting on the ground if it rains and it looks so much more tidy too. Also not shown are these ankle socks – I love a really thick sock for tennis and it’s hard to find really supportive thick socks that also don’t cost a fortune. My daughter loves these too… so I’ve already ordered them twice!

Okay… now let’s take a look at some new favorites!

(above) sun hat
I LOVE this sun hat. I also own this hat by the same brand and both are such high quality for an amazing price. They pack well and never look rumpled and they can get wet too (I try not to get mine wet but hey – it happens at the beach or pool!). I love the leather-look belt on this one… I highly recommend.
Shown with: sweater, shorts
(above & below) decorative glass beads
File under things that are totally not necessary but that make me happy! These beads are gorgeous and really are frivolous and unnecessary – but I’m a big fan. They bring a nice touch of color and texture to this little entry way table.

Hobnail glasses keep catching my eye, but every time I went to shop them they were plastic – which is great for outdoor entertaining but I wanted something more for indoors and longer lasting. I found these gorgeous glass hobnail drinking glasses and they are a great price and so beautiful in person! I’ve been sipping iced tea and even a cocktail out of them recently.

(above & below) hanging woven baskets
I craved a little refresh in our bathroom recently and replaced some framed art for these woven baskets on the wall. The framed art will find a new spot in the house (the frames need to be replaced) and in it’s place I love this more minimal and trendier look with the baskets. They were super easy to hang, I simply did a nail straight through the center into the drywall. They are very lightweight so I only used small picture frame nails. I love the fresh and modern feel.

(above & below) tea organizer
Tea or coffee? For me it’s tea! And while I don’t drink a ton of tea in the summer (minus iced tea) my tea drawer was super messy until I snagged these organizers. It’s so much tidier than having a bunch of tea in boxes that are half empty. Plus, now I can see how many tea packets I have without going through tons of boxes. This is a tea lovers dream!

6 ways to style mom jeans!

The mom-jean trend is here to stay… I’m not ditching my skinny jeans any time soon, but I do love this trend. I always feel hip and pulled together when I wear mom-jeans. I will say it’s not a style that everyone feels totally comfortable with right away. It definitely took me some time to get used to the feel and look of them.

Today I am styling the Agolde Riley – I have this style in two other pairs and they are all quite different. This pair is no-stretch. I go with my bigger size in these jeans. If you are between sizes, I recommend going up a size. What I have learned with the no-stretch jeans by Agolde is that they won’t stretch, of course, but they do start to form to your body as you wear them. They take a few wears to break in and once they do, they feel so great. I love that you can dress them up or dress them down… let’s take a look at the outfits!

Outfit 1 (above)
These jeans work so well for mom on the go looks… just a simple tee and slides for everyday wear is instantly chic with mom jeans.
Shop the look: jeans, tee, slides, sunglasses, bag is Polene

Outfit 2 (above)
The mom jeans work great for work too with a simple sweater blazer and flats. I just LOVE this look!

Outfit 3 (above)
I’m having a MOMENT with button front tops, I want to wear them everyday. I’ve realized that I like them a little oversized. They are lightweight so they work for summer with the sleeves rolled up and they are so effortless and always look pulled together.
Shop the look: jeans, top, loafers, bag

Outfit 4 (above)
Mom jeans are a staple for everyday for me with just a tank and sandals for summer. They are perfect for patio dining or date night.

Outfit 5 (above)
I love pairing a simple summer sweater with these jeans for working from home and running errands.
Shop the look: jeans, sweater, sandals, tote, sunglasses

Outfit 6 (above)
I love these jeans styled more sporty too with sneakers and stripes. It’s a great mom uniform!
Shop the look: jeans, sneakers, tank, bag, bag strap

The items I ordered from the sale are here and I’m excited to show you what I bought and chat all things sizing in order to hopefully make your ordering process easier. A few things are already out of stock (sad!) but I have hope they will restock… so I’ll be sure to keep an eye on them. Instagram Stories is probably the best place to watch for those restocks!

My goal was to go with super classic pieces for this sale. The shoe selection was a little light in my opinion so I only got two pairs… one shown here and this pair of brown mules that haven’t arrived yet. I also thought the coat selection was slim or just similar to coats I already own, so I only purchased one coat. I will say the sweaters and jeans and bags I purchased are all BIG winners. I really, really love them. It felt nice to do a more edited shop for items I really, really adore even though it meant passing up some items I still liked. I also got these earrings – I will add them here soon!

sweater sizing: runs big, I went down a size. You could do your usual size if you wanted a slouchier fit.

jeans sizing: the size guide says they run large, but in my experience that is not true. This is a 2 and they are way too tight, a 4 would be perfect.

Thoughts: I just LOVE both pieces. These jeans are ultra flattering and I love the frayed hem and they have the perfect amount of stretch. They are super modern and on trend for fall without being overly trendy. The details on this funnel neck sweater are so pretty. This is an instant classic!

sweater sizing: runs big, I went down a size.

mules sizing: true to size.

Thoughts: These three are probably my favorite from the sale in all it’s entirety. So classic, so easy to wear. I can see getting lots of wear out of this sweater. This tote has been on my wishlist and I purchased it in a lighter color, but this darker color seems more practical for suede. It’s an instant favorite. These mules are different from anything I own and I love them. They are very soft and I love that they are modern and unique from other shoes I own.

Sizing: runs big, I went down a size to XS.

Thoughts: The colors on this are SO pretty for fall and winter. It’s making me crave apple cider! This pattern is way outside of my box but the grey and white and brown would match SO much in my closet and really be a statement piece!

sweater sizing: runs big, I went down a size.

jeans sizing: I went with my bigger size and they fit perfectly. I’m between 26/27 and these are a 27.

Thoughts: This sweater is lightweight and airy but warm. I love that combo. The balloon sleeves are so pretty! This is an instant classic! These jeans are SO GOOD. I’m in love… do they come in more colors!?!? I’ll find out. They are super stretchy and soft like they’ve been worn forever, but also so flattering.  New favorite for fall for sure!

Sizing: one size fits all.

Thoughts: I just LOVE a cape, shawl, ruana… whatever you want to call it! Great for lounging, great for travel, great for throwing on over jeans, leggings, tees, sweaters… whatever! It’s so versatile and pretty!

Thoughts: This has been on my wishlist for a while. It’s technically a belt bag but can be worn crossbody like this too. I love that it’s modern and chic and instantly makes me feel more hip than I probably am. I also love that it’s not tiny and could still carry my full wallet. It’s going to be great for travel, sports, mom duty or anywhere you want to be hands free!

sweater sizing: runs big, I went down a size – you could go with your usual size for a slouchier fit.

Thoughts: This sweater is so beautiful in person. It’s very soft and quite thick and I love the v neck. I really wanted to go with timeless sweaters for the sale and this one fits that description.  I really love this layered necklace. Layered necklaces are so trendy right now and this one does all the work for you! It’s three layers with only one clasp – super easy!

Sizing: I’m in my usual size small. Fits true to size.

Thoughts: This is a GORGEOUS cashmere sweater and an amazing price. It’s super soft and perfectly lightweight for layering or on it’s own. I’m in love!

Nordstrom Anniversary Sale… what I own and love!

Today I am featuring items I own and love that are in the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale… many of these items were purchased in previous years at the sale and continue to be favorites year after year. That is what I love MOST about this sale… it’s full of really great wardrobe and home staples that you will enjoy year after year. I always try to focus on the most classic pieces or the pieces that I know will stand the test of time. Let’s take a look at some pieces I already own and love that are included in the sale at a great price…

(above) lounge top & bottom
These both run true to size, maybe a touch oversized. I am in my usual size small in both. This set is a DREAM. So soft and comfortable around the house and the truth is I’ve actually run errands in it too… not sure if that is what it’s intended for… but I went for it.

I bought this 3 or 4 years ago in the sale… wow, time flies. It’s definitely a splurge but I think I’ve gotten my money’s worth 😉 after three years. I replace the head every year and usually try to find that on sale during the Sephora sale.  I love the GloPro for fighting acne (works great on healing acne quick!) and reducing the signs of aging. My skin always GLOWS after using it.
(above) The mini Diptyque candles are a staple at the NSale and I love having them on hand. They are small but mighty and also make great little hostess gifts too.

(above) This fleece fringe blanket (color shown is ‘beige birch’) is another perennial favorite. We own three of them from previous sales and they are a family (and dog) favorite. I love that they wash well and are super durable. Ours go through the wash A LOT with teens and a dog and still look great.

(above) I first found the True & Co bras during last years NSale and I’m not lying when I say that these are the bras I wear 99% of the time now. They are so comfortable and easy to wear all year long. I now own several and love them. The sale is a great time to stock up! (or you can find the cheaper Target version here)

(above) The Barefoot Dreams blanket is just a dream… I don’t know what else to say except the hype is real. I just adore an afternoon nap or event Netflix session with this blanket. It’s incredibly soft and beautiful. They are worth every penny!

(above) These Adidas sneakers are another really great budget find during the sale. They are classic and modern and perfect for walks, the gym or just running errands. You really can NOT beat this sale price!

(above) These Sorel boots are 2 or 3 years old and definitely one of my most worn winter boots. I love the thick tread for snow and ice and they are waterproof. There is a very similar pair in this years sale for a really great price, these are definitely an investment but so worth it if you live in a snowy winter locale.

(above) I will admit that I rarely wear underwire bras anymore… but when I do, it’s this exact style. I purchased these from the sale years ago and they are still so beautiful and quite comfortable for underwire.

(above) This cashmere scarf is from the sale a few years ago, but it’s back in stock this year! It’s lightweight and so beautiful and a really great price for cashmere.

(above) This classic Madewell cardigan is another yearly favorite at the NSale. It’s so soft and lightweight but surprisingly warm. There are always quite a few color options and you will get tons of use out it!

My Nordstrom Anniversary Sale wishlist!

The Nordstrom Anniversary Sale continues to be shoppable for Nordstrom cardholders this week. Today I’ve compiled my own personal wishlist. I’ve already said it a few times, but I’m REALLY loving the selection this year. Classic sweaters, great jeans and some really fun handbags are at the top of my wishlist this year. It was almost impossible to narrow it down to a few sweaters… but I tried. Eek. I probably need to narrow this down even more. I’ve also got these fur lined mules on my wishlist and even though it’s a bit of a splurge… this grey coat too. I always stock up on candles during this sale. The diptyque candle set is one I’ve purchased from previous sales and I’m looking forward to snagging them again today. They are small but have such glorious scents. I love them around the house and they make great hostess gifts too wrapped in cellophane. These nest candles are some of my favorite too… they smell amazing. As far as handbags goes I am having the most difficulty with this category. This nude crossbody bag has actually caught my eye before so I was excited to see it on sale. I had purchased this suede tote in a lighter color before and I was worried about it getting dirty (so I returned it), but I love it in this darker color and think it will be much more practical. Also I just LOVE this snakeskin belt bag – yikes! I want them all!
