winter must haves!

Winter is here and I’m already freaking out a bit. Gosh, it’s so cold and gloomy. Today I thought I would round up my winter must haves since we are in it for the long haul from here on out. With boots and big sweaters I’m back to wearing skinny jeans more regularly. One because straight leg jeans don’t work as well with boots and two with big cozy sweaters and coats, skinny jeans or leggings just feel like better proportions on my body. I’m still wearing my straight leg jeans here and there and don’t feel like one is superior to the other… but skinny jeans and leggings (versus joggers and straight leg jeans) are just so much more practical for the colder months in my opinion. I’m still wearing my sneakers as much as possible on milder days or when there isn’t snow on the ground (it seems to come and go and come and go). I don’t mind a cold ankle if it means I can ditch the boots for a day. While I try to feel as pulled together as possible each day I never shy away from athleisure in the winter, leggings and sweatshirts are such a cozy and comfortable option. Oftentimes, comfort on a particularly miserable day weather wise is just the kind of self care I need. And I always have plenty of hats, scarves and cozy socks around too. Here I linked some of my long time favorites. If you can’t already tell, winter is definitely survival mode for me… I’m just not a winter-lover and struggle with the constant cloudy weather and cabin fever. Clothing, or the “right” clothing, actually helps with the winter blues for me. When I am warm and comfortable I’m much better equipped to face the day (or the weather, really)!

wear to where: cold winter days!

Baby it’s cold outside! I’m back in winter boots again for dog walks, errands and every time I leave the house basically! I would much rather a cute pair of flats or some comfy sneakers but it’s been bitterly cold and snowy here, so there isn’t much of a choice.

I’ve had a lot of questions about what to wear with snow boots since there are so many denim styles these days. It’s true that really only skinny jeans or leggings work well with snow boots. If you’ve seen some other cute ways to style boots, send them to me! But practically speaking I can’t see another way. I had straight leg jeans on the other day and needed to take my dog for a quick walk and yes, I could tuck them into my boots, but it was very awkward. Here are some very cute ways to style some winter boots that I am loving this season…

instagram lately!

Today I’m rounding up tons of outfit ideas from my Instagram lately… if you don’t already follow me there, I am @jillgg! Make sure to follow along with the fun! These outfits are perfectly cozy for everyday wear and I hope you find some inspiration here for your own closet. Let’s take a look at some of the outfits I have pulled together over on Instagram recently…

(above) This striped sweater is probably my favorite Amazon find from the entire year. It’s so beautiful in person and no-itch! I went up a size to get a more oversized look, it runs a little small.
Shop the look: sweater, jeans, mules, sunglasses

winter boots round up!

I’ve had LOTS of requests for a post on winter boots. Since I spend a lot of time wearing them (when I would much rather be wearing cute flats!) for Michigan winters I definitely have some all time favorites. These Uggs, this pair of Sorel and these wedges (although mine are a little different because they are a few years old) are my three go-to pairs. For walking the dog to errands, to just really really snowy days when there are no other options.  All three of those pairs are warm and comfortable and both pairs of Sorel’s are waterproof – which is very important! I put an asterisk* next to the pairs I own… all other boots featured are either because they are a reputable brand for keeping you warm or they are very attractive as far as boots go.

This season there are TONS of options and so many of them are just darling. I view boots as an investment and really don’t mind paying extra for them. If you’ve walked a dog in the snow, taken kids sledding, lived through 100 inches of snow in a season or have stood for hours on end at a ski meet… you know. I just don’t mess around with any brands that aren’t super legit in the boot world. It stinks that boots can be so expensive, but I will also say that I have so many pairs that are 5-6 years old and are still in great condition and get great wear every year, so they are truly an investment for this winter and future winters.

December Mini Capsule!

Today I’ve got a mini capsule for you for December. Filled with festive looks for casual or dressy days for the month of December. I focused on pieces that will mix and match easily and that have a little extra festive flair to them for this season of celebration. While most of the looks are Christmas themed with plaids and red and green abundant, some of the more neutral looks will work great for New Years Eve as well. Some of the looks even work for a festive office look as well. I always love adding a little something extra like a pop of plaid, a festive headband or a wintery clutch to a look to give it a more Christmas-y vibe. You can go for just a touch of festive flair, or a lot!  Let’s take a look at the pieces and the outfits… I’ve got 15 pieces and 9 outfits!

jillgg’s good life (for less)

This post is sponsored by Nordstrom and ShopStyle. All opinions are my own.

Thank you for supporting the brands that support this blog.

The holiday season is BUSY as always this year. From making sure all the gifts are purchased and wrapped, to running all the errands and wrapping up some college visits with my son and throw in a few sporting events for my kids… wow. I feel a little like Roy Kent… “she’s here, she’s there, she’s everywhere” these days (also, if you haven’t watched Ted Lasso yet, what are you doing with your life!?!?). I’m running errands and prepping for holiday travel and listen, I love a good sparkle, a good plaid or a fun twirly skirt for the holidays, but my days are mostly full of cozy sweatshirts, joggers and leggings right now. Prepping for the holidays is practically an aerobic sport!

I love shopping all the Nordstrom Made brands at Nordstrom this time of year. Brands like Zella and Caslon are the perfect mom-on-the-go brands. You can’t beat the leggings and joggers from Zella and the prices are incredibly affordable. Plus, with Nordstrom‘s FREE SHIPPING and FREE RETURNS or curbside service – it’s so easy to shop all the cozy and comfortable styles you need while you are zipping around town making the holiday magic come alive.

I’ve long raved about these joggers (the best you can find under $50!) and the Zella leggings are just as good, trust me. I own several pairs and love this blue/grey hue for winter. Paired with an oversized sweater or sweatshirt you are set for errands, carpool or that over-the-river-and-through-the-woods road trip to see family and friends this holiday season.

November bestsellers!

November was a complete blur of gift guides, winter content and all the amazing sales during Cyber Week. Whew! Thank you to everyone who supported my content this past month. It was a very fun month with some great content. December is usually a much slower month for the blog and I’m ready to start winding down the year over the next few weeks. I plan to take some time off from posting later in December and I am already looking forward to that. But let’s not get too far ahead of ourselves. There is still plenty of holiday and winter content left to get to this month!

Today I’m pulling together the bestsellers from November. Each month when I pull together these posts there are usually a handful of items that were VERY popular (the cream rises to the top!) but with November being such a big shopping month there were SO MANY items that you all loved that I couldn’t narrow it down to the usual 5 or 6 items… I definitely had to throw in some extras. These are the items YOU all loved the most over the past month… and per the usual, you all have FABULOUS taste if I do say so myself. I truly love all of these pieces myself so I can see why you all love them as well.

half zip sweater – runs true to size, maybe a touch oversized, SUPER soft and cozy!
puff sleeve top – I went up a size because it runs a little small, fun and festive for the holidays!
grey cardigan, so soft and warm, true to size, I went with my usual size small.
stovepipe jeans, the perfect not-skinny-but-not-too-wide-leg jeans with plenty of stretch. I went down a size, they run big.
ring necklace, so pretty for a gift!
always pan, SUPER popular this holiday season, it’s a GREAT gift and seriously the best non-stick pan I’ve ever used. I’m ordering another one!
funnel neck sweatshirt – I love this one so much I own two! True to size.
Daphne coat – another item I love so much I own multiples, it’s perfect over dressier clothes or even over athleisure looks to elevate them. I wear a size 2.

wear to where: holiday parties!

It’s time to get festive and celebrate the holidays! From small gatherings to larger ones, whatever your holiday social calendar involves… it’s time to celebrate! Today I pulled together a few holiday party looks that I hope you enjoy from quiet nights at home celebrating with the family to the annual White Elephant parties and everything in between after a year with no holiday celebrations it’s a great time to dress up and celebrate!
