jillgg’s good life (for less)

Thanksgiving is only a week away! I’m so excited for this holiday this year, not sure why… maybe the mashed potatoes have something to do with it? But seriously I always love Thanksgiving and usually our family is traveling but we decided to stay home this year and I am SO looking forward to a cozy weekend at home with TONS of good food and just lots of relaxing down time.

Whether you are staying home, traveling to see family, attending a Friends-giving, ordering a meal to-go or cooking in the kitchen all day – you deserve a gorgeous outfit to celebrate this year! (In my opinion.) I’ve got a little something for everyone here with cozy pieces for a day at home with the family or something a little dressier if that is what you are looking forward to as well. I hope you enjoy this inspiration!

I love a sweater and denim combo and with a plaid scarf this look is perfectly festive and festive for the main event!

A gorgeous floral blouse is what I am craving for this holiday celebration! So pretty and feminine. I love it with tall boots and a gorgeous necklace set.

Sweater dresses are so popular right now and this looks perfectly pulled together and also VERY comfortable after a big meal.

An oversized sweater and your favorite pairs of jeans is a classic combo for family time!

I’ve got some gorgeous new arrivals for you today… these are always my favorite posts to pull together. I love window shopping all my favorite retailers for what’s new. I’m definitely in a very NOVEMBER mood lately… usually I’m already skipping to Christmas, but this year I’m taking my time. I’m enjoying some leaves on the trees still and enjoying the last drops of fall before full on winter is here. It comes so quickly that I’m enjoying savoring this season.

From jeans made to be extra warm to my favorite pom pom hat in a new color to a cozy coat and gorgeous hiking boots – I’m all about staying warm and stylish for the season right now. There are so many good textures and colors available right now.

the jeans I’m loving right now…

I’ve gotten quite a few questions about what I’m loving for denim right now. With the cooler temps here jeans are my everyday (well, almost… gotta throw some joggers and leggings in there) uniform. Plus, there are SO many styles of denim right now, navigating what’s what and how it all fits is overwhelming. In general I am leaning towards straight leg jeans. I will say straight leg with more of a slimmer leg cut. I do still wear my skinny jeans from time to time, but since everyone owns and loves skinny jeans I left those out of this round up.

Today I’m focusing on the pairs I wear the most and what I really, really am loving right now as far as denim goes. I do have to say that straight leg jeans don’t work as well with cold weather and boots so for now this is what I’m wearing the most. When the weather turns super cold I’m going to have to wear more skinny jeans to work with big snow boots. I’m trying to hold out as long as possible and wear my straight leg options as much as possible right now.

If you are looking to add some more styles besides skinny jeans to your wardrobe for fall I highly recommend all of these. They all are very easy to wear (only one pair doesn’t have stretch) and I find them to be both comfortable and flattering. Really I don’t wear anything that isn’t comfortable anymore! I hope you find this round up helpful!

Let’s talk sizing. I’m between a 26/27 for jeans and will outline which pair is which below…

top row, from left:
Agolde Riley – light, This is a classic “mom jean” or straight leg jean. This is the only pair that isn’t stretchy but I’ve found this classic denim really molds to your body as you wear them. Mine are 3-ish years old and feel perfectly broken in. I go with my bigger size with this brand. I’m in a 27 here.
Agolde Riley – blue, Another pair of straight jeans with a slightly slimmer leg. Don’t let the fact that three of these pairs have the same name fool you into thinking they are all the same. They are all quite different. This pair has a slimmer leg than the pair above (in my opinion) and no distressing. With a touch of stretch these are both VERY flattering and comfortable. I go with my bigger size with this brand. I’m in a 27 here.
Agolde Riley – distressed, Same as the blue pair next to it but with distressing, this pair has a nice slim straight leg. This is hands down my most worn pair. Again, the perfect amount of stretch and a nice thick denim keeps these very flattering and comfortable. I love the distressing. I’ve owned these for over a year and the distressing has stayed really nice (some people worry about it getting worse). I go with my bigger size with this brand. I’m in a 27 here.
bottom row, from left:
Madewell Cali Demi (here or here), This style has both a raw hem or a fixed hem option, I linked both. It fits like a skinny jean up top and has a slight flare at the bottom. I love these jeans with sneakers or flats – it really highlights a great shoe! Stretchy and comfortable, I went with my smaller size in this pair. I am in a 26 here.

Madewell Stovepipe, Probably the most ‘slim’ straight leg of all the options shown here. If you are nervous about making the jump from skinny to a straight leg, this pair is the perfect baby step. They are stretchy and very comfortable. I went with my smaller size in this pair. I am in a 26 here. You could *maybe* go down 2 sizes if you were between sizes.

Madewell Perfect Vintage, This style is SUPER popular and this is another great straight leg option that is very comfortable. I always shop for the Perfect Vintage with stretch, I’ve found the styles without to be really uncomfortable. My pair is from last year and I cut off the hems myself. I linked the near exact version that is out this year. Stretchy and comfortable, I went with my smaller size in this pair. I am in a 26 here.

November capsule collection!

Today I’m bringing you a little mini capsule collection for November. It’s a touch smaller than my previous September and October capsules since those cover fall outfits quite well. This month’s capsule is more focused on the cozy month of November and Thanksgiving more specifically. From a beautiful outfit to wear to Thanksgiving dinner or Friendsgiving, to some extra cozy pieces for hanging out at home shopping online on Black Friday to some warm pieces for venturing out for tree shopping that long weekend. This post is alllllll about Thanksgiving festivities and that November cozy mood that I can’t wait to dig into this month.  I hope you find lots of inspiration here for a month of gratitude and family fun.

A few things I’m loving lately…

I’ve done a little online shopping lately where the items just didn’t fit great or where some things were okay, but not great. Usually I do a try on session for most of my online shopping but there was a lot I felt “meh” about. Not bad, just not overwhelmingly amazing. Today I thought I would just do a quick round up of a few pieces I’ve recently purchased that I really, really love. The greatest hits, if you will!

These pieces were instant favorites – the kind you pull out of the box and can’t wait to wear! And while a typical “try on session” is me trying on items for the first time, these are items I have already worn and they pass the “wear it for a day” (or more) test.  Let’s take a look at the pieces…

(above) straight jeans (shop them: here or here) & striped sweater
Sizing: I always go with my bigger size for this brand. They have a bit of stretch. For the sweater I would say it runs small, I went up a size to a medium.
Thoughts: I love these jeans and wanted a pair with no distressing in a classic straight leg. These are comfortable, suck you in *just right* and are right on trend without being overly trendy. I love them. This sweater is a great Amazon find. It’s soft (no itch) and the stripes, buttons and delicate balloon sleeves are so ‘French girl chic’ in an everyday kind of way. It’s *chefs kiss* perfection at a great price.
Shown with: clogs

Sizing: Sweater runs a little big, I am in my usual size small. You could size down if between sizes. Mules are true to size, maybe a touch small, but I went with my usual size.
Thoughts: This sweater is SO soft and cozy. It’s not super heavy so it’s the perfect balance between cozy and lightweight. I’ve worn it a few times and just LOVE it. I am always looking for a great pair of mules and this pair is gorgeous. I loved the gathered leather and the pointy toe. They are easy to wear and instantly make an outfit feel pulled together.
Shown with: jeans (or similar)

Sizing: The sweatshirt runs true to size, I’m in my usual size small. The sneakers run a bit big, I went down a half size.
Thoughts: This sweatshirt was a favorite last year, I also own it in grey and I LOVE it. When I saw this new mauve/brown color I had to have it! This is a staple for weekends or the gym over tanks when it’s cool out. It’s great for walks or errands – it’s an all around AMAZING piece. I highly recommend. These sneakers are made from recycled scarps of leather – isn’t that so cool? They are fun with leggings or joggers or even with jeans. I’ve worn these quite a bit over the past couple of weeks!

favorite winter coats from J.Crew!

J.Crew is my go-to for winter coats. I find their coats to be perfectly warm and classic. Some of these are over 5 or 6 years old and still favorites. Today I will outline their warmth and sizing information for you all if you are in need/want of a new winter coat for this season. Living in Michigan I consider myself a somewhat pro at winter coats, they get A LOT of wear and I never feel too guilty adding a new style or two to my closet each year because I know they will last forever and serve me for many seasons to come!

I wear these coats all winter long, but some are warmer than others. I ordered them from least to most warm – I’ll chat more about warmth for each coat below too.

Sizing: True to size. I am in size 2, fits like a small.
Warmth: Perfect for 40s to 50s, to make it warmer layer with a warm sweater.
Thoughts: I own this in multiple colors and it’s my go-to for leaving the house feeling pulled together in the winter. It’s easy to wear but instantly looks refined.
Shown with: sweater, jeans, flats, purse

Sizing: I went down a size to XS.
Warmth: I would say high 30s, 40s and 50s. Layer with a warmer sweater and scarf for cooler temps.
Thoughts: Love this color and this style! The gold hardware is so beautiful. I’ve worn this a few times to cold soccer games and it’s worked great! I love that it’s perfectly casual for mom duties but still looks nice.
Shown with: sweaterjeansclogs, headband

Sizing: Runs big. Mine is super old and is a 00 but is a little too small in the arms now. I would go with a 0 or 2 these days.
Warmth: 30s, 40s, 50s. Very warm. It’s thick wool with thinsulate. The perfect “dressy” warm coat.
Thoughts: I’ve owned this for SO long and it still looks great. It’s a touch small (unfortunately) but I still wear it when I can, it’s been the best investment.
Shown with: sweaterjeansankle boots, bag is Polene

(above & below) cropped puffer
Sizing: Runs big, I went down a size to XS.
Warmth: 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s. This coat is VERY warm and comfortable. I wore it to a soccer game in the low 40s and rain recently and was very comfortable.
Thoughts: The cropped puffer coat is perfectly on trend right now. I love the slightly oversized fit and thick neck styling making it very warm. The hood is a great addition, but is removable if you don’t want it.

Sizing: Runs big, I went down one size to XS.
Warmth: 20s, 30s, 40s. The only thing making this coat slightly warmer than the cropped puffer is the length.
Thoughts: This is another classic from several winters ago. I don’t think it’s available in white anymore, but you can find it in other colors. This one washes really well (a must with white) and is perfectly warm. I also like the big pocks.
Shown with: sweaterjeanssneakers
