dress round up!

It’s DRESS season… finally! From casual dresses for everyday wear and more structured dresses for the office to the perfect easy dress to throw on for a date night… I’ve got a little bit of everything for all the dress lovers out there. I have to say I never used to get into wearing dresses, but over the past few years I’ve really come to love them. They are incredibly convenient to throw on and go and always looks pulled together. Plus, often they are the coolest thing to wear on super hot days. I am LOVING all these dresses I pulled together today… I hope you find some inspiration here too!

styled x3: skirt and tank set!

Matching sets from 2020 – think matching sweats – have gotten a major update this spring and summer with matching skirts and tops. I’ve seen a few styles around already this spring and I’m excited to see more from retailers. I instantly loved how versatile they are for everyday wear or especially for packing for vacations. The skirt and top work beautifully together in what becomes a modern take on a dress – is it a dress or is it a two piece set!?!? It’s impossible to say! And each piece works on it’s own as well. The tank pairs perfectly with jeans or shorts and the skirt can be paired with tees and tanks as well.

Today I styled a darling top and skirt set into three fun outfits that I just love for spring and summer. And again, versatile pieces like this are PERFECT for packing on spring break. It’s so easy to pull together outfits with these pieces!

J.Crew late summer try on session!

I found some really great new pieces from J.Crew that I am very excited to show you today! In the past I’ve felt like retailers went straight from summer style to fall styles with no in between. This year I’m finding so many really great transitional pieces that will take you from tees and tanks to cozy wool sweaters a little easier. Lightweight cotton sweaters and late summer hues like browns and pinks and taupes are a great way to ease out of summer fashion into fall fashion more seamlessly. Today’s finds from J.Crew are just that… and while I rarely love EVERYTHING I order, this order was a total love fest. Besides one pair of jeans I ordered and did not like and did not fit, everything fit great and was so gorgeous. Talk about getting lucky!
Today I styled items with white jeans to give them a summery feel. Of course they will all look great with blue jeans too and can be worn that way now too. This way, with white jeans you can visualize how they work for now. Let’s take a look at the pieces!
striped tee (above)
Sizing: True to size. I am in my usual size small. It is a little roomy, but might shrink up a tiny bit after being washed/dried.
Thoughts: I love a stripe tee… you all probably know that by know. This one in subtle taupe/cream stripes is perfect for late summer and early fall. This top works great with white jeans for a summery look now and will be perfect layered with a cardigan or jacket later this fall.
Shown with: jeans, similar sandals

Sizing: True to size, I am in my usual size small.
Thoughts: I saw this in person at the store a few weeks back and loved it but didn’t buy and couldn’t stop thinking about it. I had to go back and grab it. I love a cable knit sweater and this piece is so soft. I love the balloon sleeves and the cropped cut. All around a winner!
Shown with: jeans, sandals

Sizing: True to size. I am in my usual size small.
Thoughts: I love this piece so much! I have this in white from earlier this spring and when this new rusty brown color released I knew I would have to have it. I wore the white version a lot this summer, it’s a great lightweight piece that works with leggings, joggers or jeans. You can easily dress it up or down.
Shown with: jeans, sandals

Sizing: Runs big. I went down one size to XS, you could even go down two sizes.
Thoughts: I just adore this. The sweater is SO soft and the dramatic sleeves and scoop neck are so fun and unique. I can tell it’s going to be an instant favorite this August and September.
Shown with: jeans, sandals

cardigan (above)
Sizing: Runs a touch big.  I’m in my usual size small, but you could go down a size if between sizes.
Thoughts: I have been eyeing this cardigan all summer and they just released new colors. I loved the white, but thought that black would be more versatile for fall for me. It works week with tees, tanks or dresses now and it will be a perfectly cozy layer for later this fall.
Shown with: jeans, tankclogs

clogs (above)
Sizing: True to size.
Thoughts: I am LOVING that clogs are back in style this fall. I’ve been seeing them EVERYWHERE. This pair is surprisingly comfortable and while I am saying a prayer that I won’t trip and fall while getting used to wearing them again (I had a pair many years ago, but haven’t worn clogs in years) I am very excited to wear these this fall!

late summer new arrivals I’m loving…

New arrivals at my favorite retailers are popping up everyday! I just love seeking out what is new and fresh for each season and truly fall is one of my favorite seasons to shop for, so I’m particularly excited to see all these fun new pieces. While camel or caramel hues have been popular for fall for a few seasons now, this fall I am also seeing a lot more brown hues make their way into new styles. These stunning browns and caramels are gorgeous for fall and definitely invoke a cozy and warm vibe as the temperatures cool. I’m also loving a lot of the preppy vibe that seems to be prevalent this year with lots of classic pieces like loafers and timeless blouses or a canvas and leather tote. A lot of the pieces feel like old favorites, but in a new and fresh way.
Here are some late summer new arrivals that are catching my eye right now!

6 ways to style: sweater over the shoulder!

I’m starting to get a little antsy for fall weather. I know I will miss these sunny and warm days, but also… fall weather is such a nice change of pace after summer. I’m trying to make the most of summer and enjoy every moment. If you are feeling like you too are feeling a little ready for fall weather but still very much living in hot summer weather I’ve got a little outfit tip for you.

For cool mornings and overly air conditioned spaces I’m loving an extra layer of a sweater or sweatshirt on the shoulders. It hints just a bit at fall, but also is practical if you show up to the grocery store with a tank and the air conditioned is too cold. It’s a similar vibe to a scarf… just a little something different.

Let’s take a look at the outfits…

jillgg’s good life (for less)

I’ve got some really great late summer finds from Old Navy. I continue to be impressed by the quality they offer at such a good price. I love that they offer simple classics like cardigans and dresses with more trendy and of-the-moment pieces like chic sweatsuits and seasonal florals too. I found SO many good pieces here that work for now and transition to fall so well. Let’s take a look at the pieces…

Sizing: Runs big, I am in my usual size small and it feels too big on the torso and armpits. I would suggest going down a size if you are between sizes.

Thoughts: Ladies, start your engines… it’s fall. I don’t know what about this tank just screams fall to me, but it has me a little giddy with excitement. The colors are just gorgeous, it’s a gorgeous color palette for late summer and early fall. It’s a great work top, zoom top or even teacher top if you are getting ready to head back to the classroom.

Sizing: True to size, slightly oversized. I am in my usual size small.

Thoughts: I love this style. So much! You can wear it buttoned up like a pullover or unbuttoned as a cardigan over a tank or dress, making it so versatile and perfect as we change seasons. The fabric is REALLY great, super soft and stretchy/drapey. I highly recommend this one!

Sizing: True to size. I’m in my usual size small.

Thoughts: WINNER! Winner! This cardigan is SO good. Soft and drapey with no itch and the perfect end of summer weight. I love it for over air conditioned spaces or cool mornings. It’s perfect for layering over tees or tanks as the weather changes this fall. This piece really great – I’m already looking at it in other colors too!

Sizing: The sweatshirt runs true to size, I am in my usual size. The pants run big, I’m in my usual size small and they are too big… a size XS would probably work much better.

Thoughts: I’m OBSESSED with this set. It’s airy but drapey somehow. The fabric feels like clouds. I am really missing lounge wear this summer and can’t wait to dig back into it this fall. The top fits oversized with dolman sleeves and a pretty cowl neck. The pants are a dream, I love that they don’t have a tie waist to make them more slimming and then pockets and dramatic wide legs. These are two more pieces I highly recommend.

Sizing: True to size. I’m in my usual size small.

Thoughts: If you are looking for a late summer dress, this is a great option. I love the creamy white and the rib knit is super comfortable and not clingy. It works great layered with a jacket, blazer or cardigan too. I realized I have a very similar dress already, so I won’t be keeping this one, but I still wanted to show you since I really like it.

Sizing: I flubbed the sizing on this. I accidentally ordered a small petite and meant to order a small. It still works but it might be difficult to get a real feel for the true sizing. I’m guessing this one is a little shorter in the length and that the waist of the dress would hit lower if it were a true small. I would still say TRUE TO SIZE, but hey… good news, I’ve confirmed it’s available in petite for those interested. 😉

Thoughts: I just LOVE this. It’s great for weekends and casual stuff but also with back to school and back to work in mind I think it would work well for teachers, zoom calls and even a casual or creative work environment. This is another one where I realized after trying it on that I have something similar, so I likely won’t be keeping it (even though it’s tempting) but I really, really like and highly recommend it.
